What is Softshell?
Softshell is an intermediate layer from the layer system, but the softshell is often worn as an outer layer during walking. All softshell jackets are windproof, water-repellent and have breathability. A softshell is not waterproof (not taped on seams) as standard. We can easily attract a hardshell over a soft shell when it starts to rain.
Softshell and its wind-watertightness depend on the intermediate membrane used, this membrane can have a water column to, for example: 50,000. The water column represents the water pressure against which the material is resistant before water leaks through. The water column is determined on the basis of how many mm water can rest on a cm2 "Water pressure". This is measured by placing a cylinder filled with water on the substance. So when 1000mm water can rest on a CM2 substance, it has a water column of 1000.
Softshell and its breathing ability depend on the intermediate membrane used, this membrane can have a water vapor permeability to for example 20,000 g / m2 / 24h
